About Gentle Yoga

Hi, my name is Karin – I am passionate about yoga & it’s related practices & teaching.

My Classes (Tuesdays from 3.30pm – 5pm) are based mainly on Hatha Yoga principles with attention to breathing, strengthening, posture alignment and calming the mind. I also include aspects of Iyengar practice in using props such as foam blocks, chairs and wall spaces. The emotional, mental and physical aspects of the practice are very important to me. My Class size is small allowing individual attention. Being also a Tai Chi and Qi Gong Instructor, I include some Qi Gong moves in the warm–up section. Qi Gong (sometimes also called Chinese Yoga) is very suited for this purpose.

When arriving in NZ from Germany in 1981 for a month’s holiday, I did not expect to stay just that bit longer.

We (my husband and I) moved from Auckland to Omokoroa in 2015, and I started with my GENTLE YOGA class a year later at the Settlers Hall. The Hall is such an icon in Omokoroa with so much character and history.

Looking back, my yogic journey began in 1987 with attending evening classes. The hobby became a passion. I started to train as a teacher in 2000/2001 with IYTA (International Yoga Teachers’ Association) and Ashram Yoga. Following my certification, I taught Community Education evening classes for 8 years.

Finally in 2008, I changed my career path and retired from my full time job in travel. I started BAYS YOGA (my own business) with various classes, added Tai Chi and began studying specific fitness courses at the Auckland University of Technology (School of Sport & Recreation). Soon after, I was contracted by AUT to work with their N2O (Never2 Old) Active Aging Program on Auckland’s North Shore. The 5 years at AUT were very rewarding and enjoyable. My special interest was working with our more mature to senior age groups. Another important project for me was the creation of adaptive courses for clients with special health conditions like Parkinson’s, MS, Cerebral Palsy, etc., Those programs, based on Yoga and Tai Chi, I ran in conjunction with the AUT Physiotherapy Department.
